As we all know, today we all live in a media dominated world with a rapid developing speed. Media is a way for the people to keep themselves informed about what is happening around them.We could read the news all over the world once something amazing happened. Information is more available to the public today because of social media.
With the advent of media, it quickly influences people’s life and plays a vital role in it. There are various media like TV, newspaper, internet, mobile phones and so on. It is hard to imagine people without all these things one day.
So why does it have a massive effect on our life? Maybe some people are not aware of the impact that plays in their life. But we should admit that the media shapes people’s perceptions, beliefs and attitudes profoundly, especially the younger generation. The media can serve as a source of entertainment to the general public, like the radio and television offer many programs that could entertain people. What’s more, we could also learn many things related to politics, education, finance and health from the TV, because such visual media could make the process of study much easier and entertaining.
Media educates the people to know about how to use them. It is also a link between the government and people because all the policies and activities of government are conveyed through the media. Advertisement let us know the various products in the market and we can better make our choices buying them.
As for me, I didn’t notice the importance of the media when I was still young. But it indeed has a great effect in my life. Every morning we check out the latest news on phone and share the news in sport, fashion and celebrities during our lunch time. And we will also discuss the movie we saw recently with our friends. Although the media has benefited us a lot, but we still have to had a clear mind of its power.
The media includes primarily internet and mobile phone as the basic tools for sharing and discussing information. It provides a platform to communicate through words, pictures and music. Take the internet for example, many people now shop online, I have shopped online before, and I found that it is very risky for us to buy what we see on TV or internet because not everything is in accordance with the pictures we see on net.
And on the other hand, when speaking of the internet, of course we will think about the pros and cons of it for modern young generation. The media education will clearly continue to play a prominent role in society at present and it will directly affect the attitudes, behavior and skills on teenagers. But at the meanwhile they are easily exposed to a world of violence, crime and racial diversity. Because they are still too young, they won’t think seriously whether it is a good behavior, they just follow the guidance of the media. Studies have suggested that the exposure to violence on television, movies and video games make the children more aggressive, fearful, lest trusting and more accepting of violence. They will be more aggressive and less trusting towards their friends, teachers and siblings. Some of them may carry out some violent act that they see in the violent programs and become more inclined to commit acts of violence.
Nowadays, news is published in an exaggerated manner to attract the attention of people, which is against the ethic of journalism. Sex and violence in media also lead towards the sex crimes in the society. And sometimes the behavior of the celebrity stars would affect us deeply too, some stars gain too much importance and sometimes they will reveal some wrong behaviors which will affect the young people. What’s more, many teenagers buy the things that are represented by the famous stars online, even though they are expensive for them.
In today young generation, they want to be popular and admired by their friends. They want to create the ideal image of themselves because of their vanity. Some advertisements try to influence the people by telling them the importance of branded items. As a result the teenagers pay great attention to their status and think that by buying expensive branded goods they can show their high status in the society.
It seems that the media has successfully influenced us. Everyday there are hundreds of thousands of news released towards the public. But there is one question: Are they all true? Should we believe in all of them? I used to think that all the news is definitely true because it must be in the process of investigation before the news is released. But in some places, maybe some of the news that people read and see is just what they want people to believe. We can not deny the fact that the role the media has played in the society, but we can not let it affect our mood or life in a bad way. So it is very important for us to maintain a clear mind towards the different media.
The media does play a role in considering thin as beautiful and fat as ugly. It has led to a general opinion that fat is out. This makes the overweight feel out of place. They are ready to starve themselves to lose weight. This has led to increasing cases of anorexia. An inferiority feeling and lowered confidence in people with not so perfect bodies can lead to eating disorders.
I still remember once a time, when I was in senior high school. There was a girl who was a little bit fat and felt herself inferior to other students. Owing to this reason, she was always alone and felt shy to get along with others. And during that time many websites are advertising the drug that could help people lose weight and get thin. She was attracted by that and took the drug. What is more, she ate disorderly and finally it was checked that she fell in a faint owing to hypoglycemia. Many girls at that time were obsessed with losing weight and keeping fit. They even don’t have lunch only to maintain their weight. But they didn’t realize that it would ruin their health as a result if they trust every media without thinking.
All in all, there are various effects of the media on the society. Media influence our life and it is obvious that there are positive as well as negative influences of the media. Nevertheless, it also depends on the way people perceive things. The only way to prevent yourself from them, is to not allow them to influence you. Don’t believe in them without thinking. Use your judgment before following anything. Put things in perspective, and don’t let the media influence you to do the wrong things.
